Historical Museum - Collections

From the little independente Républic to the Industrial City

Founded in 1864, the Historical Museum boasts very rich collections, chiefly made up of items of furniture and clothing, tools and toys, drawings, portraits, etc., with, in particular, the famous Klapperstein, the statue of the Savage, model people and reconstructed interiors (bedroom and kitchen of Sundgau). The themed circuit offered to visitors puts the history of Mulhouse into perspective and allows them to discover life in Alsace in the olden days.
Since 1969, the Historical Museum has been in the former Town Hall of Mulhouse, which still retains some of its original official functions - the Grand Council room continues to be a venue for weddings and meetings of the Town Council (it is certainly the only museum to still be used in this way). As well as the areas devoted to permanent collections, the Museum has rooms for temporary events and exhibitions, in the Décapole room and the former Grain Store, allies of Mulhouse in those days. These frescoes have been restored and modified several times.
